                 RE:       Day of Remembrance

On Wednesday, March 14th at 11:00 a.m., through careful coordination and planning between the JSHS Student Council, faculty advisors, and me, we have planned an assembly that is a day of remembrance and school unity. Through this assembly, we will remember the individuals that lost their lives in the Parkland, Florida shooting, as well as those in other past instances of school violence, and we will work to unify our school as we look toward a positive future for all.

This assembly will allow our students to partake in the memorializing of the 17 people killed. The goal of this assembly is to provide the students and staff with the opportunity to participate in the National Day of Remembrance while keeping our kids safe.

During the day of remembrance, the students and staff are asked to wear black to show their support around the elimination of school violence. At the assembly, students will light a candle and read off memories for each life that was lost after which the Student Council will ask our student body to work toward positive change. They will be encouraging everyone to focus on kindness and helping everyone feel like they belong. Lastly, a larger candle will be lit in remembrance of all the other victims that have lost their life during an act of school violence.

It’s important for students to know this is a building level assembly that was developed by their peers. During this time we will continue to follow the Code of Conduct and expect our students to remain in the school building, at our assembly, and under the direct supervision of school staff.

I am expecting that this will be a very positive day for our school and that we, too, can be a part of positive change in our world. If you have any questions please call my office at (607) 693-8105.
